Back to Projects | Farmer In The Classroom Program

Farmers’ Market Stand Program:
The farmer sets up a stand similar to one at a farmers’ market, often in conjunction with a school-sponsored Nutrition Fair. These are usually set up in a yard or in an auditorium, for students to come by and visit. Farmers often give mini presentations similar to those given in the classroom program, but less formally. Farmers bring a variety of produce, including fruits and vegetables that the students may not be familiar with. Farmers enhance their stand with pictures of their farm, and sample sizes are more generous than the Option 1 program, fulfilling the equivalent of 2 servings of fruits and vegetables.

After the visits, the students are more excited about eating fresh produce because of the connection they have made between the produce and the person who actually grew it. A teacher from Catskill Elementary reported, “The children were amazed to meet a farmer and taste his crops.” Another from Basset Elementary said that it was “Great exposure for urban students.” One teacher from Cantebury Elementary wrote, “The children were actually excited to eat veggies!”
